Ungana-Afrika worked with the Meraka Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on Broadband for All, which aims to provide broadband connectivity to South Africa’s under-served areas through a community-centric model rather than a telco-driven model. The model leverages internally developed wireless-mesh technologies to link priority government sites and high bandwidth users such as schools, municipalities and government offices, who in turn provide a link to smaller customers such as businesses, NGOs and individuals. The model relies on local entrepreneurs to operate, maintain and expand the network, tailoring their services to meet local needs. By aggregating the latent demand for internet in under-served areas and using low-cost technologies, Ungana-Afrika expects the model to provide affordable internet connectivity in areas that larger service providers do not see as economically viable.

Mobenzi is a software service that rewards people for completing tasks on their mobile phones. These tasks involve certain types of problems that are difficult for a computer to solve without assistance from a real person – even someone without expert knowledge of the problem. The same company, Clyral - a software development company based outside Durban in South Africa, created Mobile Researcher to allow organisations to capture data in remote locations using standard mobile phones. In 2009 they extended the Mobile Researcher platform to cater for the completion of human intelligence tasks and to pilot the service with low income people in South Africa’s urban poverty nodes.

Agri Clinic gathers the latest research findings and agricultural data from the Sri Lankan Department of Agriculture, the University of Peradeniya, and CABI (www.cabi.org) and transforms it into simple, farmer-friendly communication material such as leaflets, booklets, video CDs, and e-books etc. It also provides an important feedback loop by transmitting local knowledge back to research institutions.
